What do Six Flags Over Texas and Wynnewood North have in common? Both are products of developer Angus G. Wynne, Jr.'s creative genius.
Mr. Wynne, who graduated from the University of Texas, return to Dallas after serving in the U.S. Navy to begin work on the expansive community known as Wynnewood. His aim was to create a modern development of high quality houses and retail. While only three miles from downtown Dallas, Wynnewood really was a world unto itself. The development features single family homes, apartments as well as a 53-acre shopping center known as Wynnewood Shopping Village. When construction began, the 820-acre development was the largest of its kind in the country.
The development of Wynnewood North, on the upper part of the development, started in the 1950s. This addition of approximately 350 residences is known for its large, tree-shaded lots and low slung mid-century architecture. Most of the homes are single-story brick traditions, although there are many stunning examples of mid-century moderns. The residences of Wynnewood North range in size from 2,000 to 3,500 square feet.
Large formal rooms, spacious kitchens, and generous outdoor living areas were often incorporated as a way to cater to upper-middle class tastes. Plaster moldings, hardwood flooring, and brightly-tiled baths are signature features found in most of the homes within this community. Homes within Wynnewood North are built around lush parks and greenbelts as well as small lakes creeks.
- Wynnewood North was named "Best Neighborhood in Dallas" by the Dallas Observer in 2012.
- Noted Dallas architect, Bud Oglesby, designed one of his first contemporary homes on Bizerte Drive. The home extolled the virtues of nature and took advantage of the hilly site.
